Somatic Experiencing is a potent psychobiological method for resolving trauma symptoms and relieving chronic stress. It resets the nervous system, restores inner balance, enhances resilience to stress and increases a person's vitality, equanimity, and capacity to actively engage in life. The SE approach releases traumatic shock , which is key to transforming, PTSD and the wounds of emotional and early developmental attachment trauma.
Somatic Experiencing (SE)therapy tracks the body. The client may feel body sensations such as s sensations in the body that have been trapped by traumatic experience, and gently facilitates the release of energy (emotional and physical) without the client having to re-experience flashbacks. Trauma can be hidden for years behind loneliness, grief or anger. SE works because the body has an intelligence that knows how to release this stored pain.
Touch is used in Somatic Experiencing to regulate the nervous system, create safety and establish a healing attunment, so that trauma can be discharged from the body. The client may feel body sensations such as tingling, mild shaking, vibrations and tremors. The effect of SE, once the trauma is released, is a sense of well-being, untethered from emotional constriction, an absence of fear and a return of inner strength, resilience and joy. Many clients experience dramatic shifts in their lives after SE and find themselves becoming more empowered and open hearted with the desire to connect to others.
How does SE work?
SE is a biophysiological approach to healing trauma. Peter Levine has said that trauma does not rest in the event but in the individuals nervous system. By paying attention to the clients nervous system, the trained therapist supports the client in their experience of a more " coherent" and " resilient" nervous system.
How long does SE take?
The length of time and number of sessions in which a client will visit a practitioner will depend on several factors, including the severity and duration of the trauma and the degree to which the trauma has affected the individuals nervous system. A conversation with the practitioner in the initial session may be helpful in providing this kind of information.
What kind of trauma can SE treat?
SE Practitioners can successfully work with developmental traumas (such as childhood neglect, abuse and ongoing medical or physical issues) and shock traumas (such as assaults, falls, motor vehicle accidents, and surgeries).
What is a typical session like?
The SE trauma resolution method does not require the traumatized person to retell or re-live the traumatic event. Instead, it offers the opportunity to engage complete, and resolve-- in a slow and supported way--the body's instinctual flight, fight and freeze responses. This resets the nervous system, restores inner balance, enhances resilience to stress, and increases a person's vitality, equanimity and capacity to actively engage in life. The SE Practitioner offers an environment of impartial and compassionate support to facilitate the release of trauma.
